LICENSING

The Savvy Caregiver education program was created at University of Minnesota and originally published in 2002 and recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Over this time, its content and materials have since been adapted and translated by the University of Minnesota, Emory University, and other collaborating organizations.

The program is not public domain or “open source” material, even when funded by state or federal grants. Savvy Caregiver is copyrighted and trademarked material that must be used under license and with permission. Since 2006, University of Minnesota has assessed licensing fees on select Savvy program materials. As of July 1, 2021, The University of Minnesota has begun assessing licensing fees on all Savvy programs and assigned rights to Savvy Systems, LLC to manage copyright and licensing. The University of Minnesota, the primary copyright holder of Savvy Caregiver has issued a licensing letter explaining these terms.

As such, to deliver any Savvy Caregiver program (in-person or virtually), you must now purchase a license to deliver Savvy. This includes, but is not limited to, the following Savvy programs:

Savvy Caregiver® (6 sessions)
Savvy Caregiver® Advanced (4 sessions)
Savvy Caregiver® Express (3 sessions)

  • Use of updated authorized trainer and caregiver manuals.

  • Updated program materials (including course videos, presentation slides, and handouts).

  • Access to Licensed Only area on savvycaregiver.com with updated materials and other offerings.

WORKSHOP LICENSING FEES

Since July 2021, the purchase of workshop licenses has been required in order to offer (or continue offering) Savvy Caregiver workshops in order to be in copyright compliance with the University of Minnesota and other copyright holders.

If your organization has delivered any Savvy Caregiver workshops since July 1, 2021 that have not been under license purchase will be required for each workshop.

A “workshop” is defined as any multi-session Savvy program (i.e., Savvy Caregiver, Savvy Caregiver Advanced and Savvy Caregiver Express).

Workshop licensing fees and bundles can be used to deliver any of the Savvy programs. If you purchase a bundle, multiple Savvy workshop programs can be offered under the same license bundle. Workshop licensing fees and bundles do not expire. For most organizations, the 10-Workshop Bundle is the most economical. If you intend to offer Savvy for multiple years in the future, we recommend the 10-Workshop Bundle.

PAYMENT OF BACK FEES

All organizations must pay applicable licensing fees retroactively to July 1, 2021. Licensing fees are based upon the number of Savvy Caregiver workshops (e.g., 6-week, 4-week, 3-week programs) you have offered since July 1, 2021. Choose an appropriate licensing bundle on our purchase page to comply.

END-OF-USE DATE

Organizations choosing not offer Savvy Caregiver must notify Savvy Caregiver and stop using Savvy Caregiver programs, content, and materials, effective July 1, 2021.
