Savvy Caregiver™ Core Curriculum

how it works

Savvy Caregiver™ is an evidence-based psychoeducational training program that involves a 12-hour course for family caregivers of persons living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. Savvy aims to provide family caregivers with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to carry out the caregiving role. Savvy introduces a caregiving decision-making model and emphasizes the need for caregiver self-care.

At its core, Savvy Caregiver™ curriculum is the foundation for all other versions, adaptations, and translations of Savvy Caregiver™ found on this website. In addition to the original 6-week program, additional versions of the Savvy program have been developed to meet the needs of specific populations.

WHY IS IT SUCCESSFUL?

Randomized control trial (RCT) evaluations from the original study and evaluations of the program versions demonstrate:

  • Increased caregiver knowledge about dementia and dementia caregiving
  • Decreased caregiver depression
  • Decreased caregiver burden
  • Increased caregiver skill
  • Increased caregiver confidence
  • Increased caregiver well-being
